5 Steps to Achieve Balance in your Life

We have all heard of work-life balance. However, when we think of work-life balance, we just think about how we need to better manage our time between our work and our personal lives. But sometimes that just isn’t enough, to help us feel better, and happier. And at the end of the day, isn’t that what we want? To feel better and to be happier? This is why I prefer to look at life balance as a whole. Below are 5 steps that you can work on that can help you gain more balance in your life.

Achieve balance in life

1. Identify what’s most important to you and your priorities

Just stop and think about this. What is most important to you right now? Is it your career? Your health? Your family? Knowing this, and knowing your priorities in life, helps you rank your tasks and activities, and helps you make better decisions – decisions like whether you should take that promotion, or if you should take a step back. Every time you get stuck, just think about what’s important to you, and work towards that.

2. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses

Do you believe that someone can be good at everything? Surely, not. We are not superhuman. It is common for people to compare themselves with the people around them, and to feel inferior. But, we are all unique individuals, with different personalities. We each have our own strengths and weaknesses. Knowing your strengths, lets you know which areas you can focus on and use to your advantage.

Knowing your weaknesses, and acknowledging it, helps you accept yourself for who you are at this point in time. Acknowledge that it is not a strength, and find ways to either work around your weaknesses, or work on different techniques you can use to develop the areas that you are weak in. You would be amazed that by improving yourself slightly in your area of weakness can make a difference to your performance, and your self-esteem. At times you will also realise that you just needed a different way of learning!

3. ME time

I know how it is. There is never enough time in a day – juggling between work, family, and just life in general! But it is so important to ensure that you spend some time for yourself. Allocate some time to just do what you love, or to just spend some quiet time, away from the hecticness of life. Pamper yourself with a massage, a facial, reading a book, or doing a hobby that you love.

Something I've always wanted to do is to go away alone on a retreat and just re-charge!

4. Spend time with loved ones

It is also important to make the time to socialise as aside from combating loneliness, it also helps us reduce stress by focusing on things outside of yourself, and helps boost your mood, which helps strengthen our immune system!

5. Health

It is not just enough to look after our mind and our emotional needs. Our bodies and minds are linked, and a better health leads to a better mental state, and eventually helps feeling more balanced. Few areas which are crucial to our health are as below:

  • Ensure 7-8 hours of sleep a day
  • Exercise at least 2-3x/ week
  • Drink 2 litres of water a day
  • Get the nutritions your body needs
  • Learn to manage your stress
